About Garden AdventuresIn 2007 Dow and Linda Whiting decided to start Garden Adventures Nursery to share their passion for gardening and landscaping with the local community. Dow earned his degree in horticulture from Missouri State University and owned and operated his own growing nursery for 15 years prior to opening Garden Adventures. Linda had several years experience in business operations which included running her own landscape company.

They found an ideal piece of property on highway 14 west of Nixa and started work to level, clear and build. Sheltered by trees and on fairly level ground, the only drawback would be the dry creek. So levees had to be built to protect the nursery from flooding.
Raised soil berms were created to provide well-drained improved soil for plantings of Azaleas and other plants.

In any adventure there are setbacks as well as breakthroughs and in September 2010 a flood which affected most of Nixa washed parts of the nursery away, even carrying plants away downstream. A group of volunteers came and helped rebuild the berms that had been damaged.

At first it seemed there was plenty of space and the nursery expanded eastwards with cold frames to house azaleas and a propagation house for Dow to take cuttings and start seed for his plant breeding programs. However this space was soon filled and in spring 2011 a new site was purchased and set up as a propagation and growing facility. This also created space to expand the perennial program and bring more diversity to the retail nursery.

June 2012 will be the 5th anniversary for Garden Adventures Nursery and Dow and Linda would like to invite you to join them in celebrating on June 1st.
